When it comes to Engineering students the journey from school to college is often marred with several challenges. One of the main reasons behind this has to be the selection process for engineering students.

The majority of engineering aspirants have to go through entrance exams like JEE Mains or JEE Advanced. Considering the number of seats on offer and a large number of aspirants, there is tough competition and therefore students have to prepare hard to get admission in the engineering college.

In order to get admission, students are busy cracking the entrance exams, they are unable to prepare themselves for the challenges ahead in engineering. To help them, Edignite has jotted below, the top 5 ways in which engineering students can excel in their first-year engineering studies.

    1. Get your basics clear

The subjects you study and the concepts you learn in the first year of your engineering would be the fundamentals, that build the premise of your entire engineering degree. Students will have to study three basic subjects, mathematics, physics, and chemistry during their first-year engineering course.

Considering that students are familiar with many of the concepts being taught in the first year, they often tend to ignore these subjects.  However, when it comes to engineering’s first year, the orientation with which these concepts are taught is completely different and necessary to aid and assist future studies.

    2. Look beyond the prescribed syllabus

One of the major changes that students notice after joining an engineering college is regarding academic orientation. While in school there is always a prescribed syllabus and a limited number of textbooks to work with, at college neither of them is limited. While engineering colleges do have a defined syllabus but that is in no way holistic or complete.

In order to achieve this, students would have to look at things that are beyond their textbooks and go through reference books and other sources to understand the given concept better and in detail.

    3. Connect with your staff

For the first-year engineering students, their staff or professors are more than just their teachers. Unlike college teachers, engineering college staff often treat their students as equals in their pursuit of academic inquiry.  They are more friendly and approachable. Engineering students can approach them even after work hours to clarify any doubts on the subject.

Apart from this, these professors are going to be their academic support for the next four years of their B.Tech. Therefore, it is very important for the students to build a special bond with them and to get references for the final year placement season.

    4. Build peers and study groups

Researchers point to the benefits of working in groups as addressing the psychological, social, and emotional aspects of academic life, as well as educational. Engineering students have to often deal with several problems academic and personal during the first year of their engineering college.

Peer groups can go a long way in helping first-year engineering students to cope up with this academic stress. So, try to find a group of friends, who have similar interests and backgrounds and form a peer group to handle your academic-related problems.

    5. Use technology to your advantage

Another very important tool in the journey of first-year engineering students would be technology. Technology is becoming an important part of a student’s academic life. Now the students of Engineering Colleges in India are dependent on technology such as having the application on their phone which reminds them about the next date of their final exam.

With the development of IT solutions, all knowledge is literally at your fingertips all you need to do is to key in some words and you can have a solution to the toughest questions thrown at you within minutes.
