Engineering always seems like the coolest profession in the world. Engineers carry a particular reputation with them.  But, as with any other profession, there are various stereotypes and myths about engineers that simply aren’t true.

Looking to boost your Engineering career? Edignite takes you to an in-depth look at common myths about engineers and brings you the truth.

7 Most Common Myths About Engineers

Below are the myths of what many people tend to categorize engineers.

Myth #1. Engineers are not very creative

It only seems logical. Creativity skills make the world move forward and so creative people can find an outlet for their creativity in the field of engineering. Being an engineer is all about gaining a careful balance between logic, critical thinking, creativity, attention, and passion for change and innovation.

    Myth #2 Engineers love Math

This is simply not true. Engineers need to be good at Math but that does not mean that they are thrilled about it. Engineering is a profession where you simply need to enthusiastically apply your skills towards a task you find undesirable. Engineers are very valuable to business success as they are good at finding a solution for difficult assignments.

Myth #3 Their work is boring

Engineering is an exciting career because of its flexibility. Engineers are problem-solvers and thinkers by default and they work in a variety of fields to analyze, develop and evaluate large -scale complex systems to improve and maintain current systems or creating brand new projects. So that’s the farthest from boring you will ever get.

Myth #4 Have poor communication skills

Communication is just as important as technical knowledge at present times. Obviously, engineers will have good communication skills that build trust and make it easier for all the team members to do their jobs well. Also, Engineers don’t stay away from society as they attend conferences, and work in groups to share ideas, innovate, create products and much more.

Myth #5 Women can’t be Engineers

In the past, women were tasked to stay at home while men work to earn a living. But, it is slowly changing now. More and more, women are increasingly going into the STEM sector and they are bringing ideas with a different perspective of problem-solving and creativity. Edignite explains that women can typically succeed in a male-dominated field like engineering.

Myth #6 Engineers have limited interests

Over many years, the image of an engineer has somehow become the definition of ‘geek’ and ‘nerd’. Because their work involves a high level of concentration, commitment, passion, and attention to detail, it’s only logical they fully immerse themselves in it. However, engineers are people too, they have varying interests that add value and happiness to their lives.

Myth #7 Engineers are confined to one job and one location

People think that the skills engineers acquire are not transferable on an international level, but this actually applies more to the field of law. Engineering consists of a set of standardized principles and correlations, so many countries welcome skilled engineers. Thus, moving abroad can actually easier if you are an engineer.

Edignite hopes the above myths about engineering helped you decide better if engineering is a worthwhile career for you. Cheers!
